HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiatives

Projects through the Office of Health Promotion and Education

About the initiatives

HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives at Penn State are currently housed in the Office of Health Promotion and Education, University Health Services. However, collaboration with student groups, other departments in the Division of Student Affairs, academic departments and community organizations has enabled us to achieve our goals.

A course implemented in fall 2005, Biobehavioral Health 297 SISTA ( Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS) is based on a nationally recognized peer-led program to prevent HIV Infection among African American young adult women. This model was previously tested with 18-24 year olds in the community . It applies social cognitive theory as well as the theory of gender and culture.

Collaboration with courses in Biobehavioral Health (416) and Women's Studies (100) provides service-learning opportunities for students taking courses in these areas.

Internships for students majoring in Public Relations continue to be offered by the Office of Health Promotion and Education.
